Even the best fall down sometimes

Stardate, 2 December, 1995. Montreal hosts the Wings, who go on to light up the Habs for 12 goals. Patty gets pulled after 9, but at that point, the damage is done. Of course.... St Patrick quit that night and never again donned the bleu blanc et rouge, but that's another story entirely. The point is, everyone has a bad night. Everyone has shitty days. So Kari had one last night. BFD. I don't want to hear any "Trade Lehtonen!" bullshit because what'll that accomplish? Kari had one bad game. We all have bad days. And no matter how good he may have been last night, THE TEAM STILL DIDN'T SCORE. So you trade Kari and you bring in Ponyboy, who'll probably get lit up just the same as Kari because we STILL don't have 6 (or really, even 4) good defencemen, there's STILL no one scoring, and goalies aren't gods. They're mortals. And just like you and me, they have off days. Except when you or I fuck up at work, a big red light does not go on and thousands do not cheer/boo. Sometimes it feels like that at my job, but I'm pretty certain it doesn't actually happen.

And let me tell you something else. Being a fan is not about screaming for the heads of the guys who shit the bed in one game, it's about loving your team, and your players, win or lose. Now maybe I'm a little different from most fans, because I honestly couldn't give a shit less about the name on the front. I follow players, I don't care about teams, because team loyalty is a completely dead and foreign concept anymore in hockey. Teams aren't loyal to their players, why should the fans be loyal to the teams? Case in point: Jason Smith and Olie Kolzig. And even though when the day comes that Kari moves on from Atlanta (which might be at the end of this season, by his own choosing, if this team doesn't straighten the fuck up and play something a little better than midnight beer league), I will follow him to whatever team is next, because I love him as a player. So am I biased? Probably. But I'd rather be biased than be a jerkoff who couldn't stop a goal if his/her life depended on it, yet takes an exorbitant amount of glee in talking shit about guys who have made playing hockey their entire life.

You know what hockey is like? It's like the stock market. Panicking does nothing. Just sit back and let it ride. To borrow a line from Sting Cheese Incident, the roller coaster's gotta go to the bottom before it climbs to the top again. So simmer down people, jesus. Big fucking deal. One game out of an 82 game season. Life goes on. Learn from the game and move onto the next. Because as far as I'm concerned, that game never happened. MOVING ON!

That almost looks like a goal....
