You want to know why? This is why.
You want to know this team can get fucked? Here's why:
No, this is not a repeat from last month, last year, or last season.
So in summation, fuck you, fuck your beer league team, fuck your inept GM, fuck your complete lack of defence, fuck what you try to pass off as "offence" and fuck the stupid fans who keep wanting to blame the problem on Kari. Here's a tip, mouthbreathers. If you didn't have Kari? You wouldn't win ANY games. Try that on for size.
GOD I hope he's traded by the 4th.

Side note
Just as an aside, I'm kind of going through a blogging existential crisis wherein I've become comfortable with the fact that no one really gives a shit what I have to say, and it's not like I live for writing it down either. Posts will be sporadic for a little while.
Thus, I leave you with this: Thrashers, if you think you can just start dicking off again and coasting just because you're finally learning how to play together, you're dead wrong. Step up and play hard, be men. And remember - if you take care of your goalie, he will take care of you.
Tuna out*.

Wow, I feel like a dipshit.
This has nothing to do with much of anything, except that when I make a botch of this magnitude, I really feel an obligation to share it with the public.
Did the rest of you know the Wild's logo is a BEAR'S HEAD????
I HAD NO IDEA! I thought it was just a cool shaped image of the wilderness.

Olympic lure hooks Savard
Before we get into Savvy being great, there's things I do want to write about eventually about the Thrashers. But I'm kind of keeping it to myself for right now and just watching what they're doing as I form my thoughts. Actually, life's just gotten super busy so it's more like finding time to think. But um. Yeah. Hey did you change your hair? It looks rilly good!
And of course... good job keeping the throat guard on Kari. How long'd that last? 2 weeks? 3? I feel you. I dunno how anyone wears them, they drive me crazy. Have you considered a kevlar turtleneck? No? Just a thought.
Anyway, back to one of the ones we let get away:
And, yes, he knows there is a lot of hockey to be played over the next year and a lot of hype before the torch is lit in Vancouver.
But when the league takes an extended break next February, not for an all-star game but for the Olympic Games, the Ottawa native suddenly may be a name familiar to Canadians coast-to-coast.
"(The Olympics) are always in the back of my mind, especially with it being in Vancouver," Savard acknowledged yesterday as the Bruins prepared to face the Leafs at the ACC. "I've got some family there. It would be one of the highlights of my career if I got the chance to play for Canada."
With training camp still months away, it is anything but a short list that Steve Yzerman and his staff are working. And as a smallish centre, the 5-foot-10 Savard might have to move to the wing to get his shot.
There is no denying, however, that he's making his case. Prior to last night's action, Savard was a league-best plus-29, dispelling an old knock that he can't play defence.
As well, his 55 points this season not only lead the Bruins, but are tied for third among Canadian-born NHLers, behind only Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby (60) and Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf (56).
"I think he has earned (the attention)," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Since last year, he has shown he is capable of playing a good two-way game. The criticism he was taking at one point, he kind of silenced that and has kept on doing it this year."
He also has been a testament to perseverance. When discussions about the 2006 Canadian team began, Savard was just starting to play for his third NHL team and finally exhibiting the scoring touch that made him a junior star with the Oshawa Generals.
The New York Rangers, who took him in the fourth round of the 1995 draft, dealt him to Calgary in 1999 and, after a so-so stint there, was traded to Atlanta in 2002.
After a breakthrough 2005-06 season in which he scored 28 goals and 69 assists, Savard was a sought-after free agent. At the time, Savard was public about his desire to come to Toronto. There was a reluctance on the part of Maple Leafs management, however, because of the perception that his 97-point season as a Thrasher was largely the result of being on a line with Ilya Kovalchuk.
So, on the same day the Leafs signed Pavel Kubina, the Bruins landed Savard and the now 31-year-old has been the B's leading scorer ever since.
While the hockey world can't generate enough buzz over John Tavares these days, Savard has one up on the junior sensation. When starring for the Gens, he compiled a club-record 413 points. Before being dealt to the London Knights earlier this month, Tavares was at 381.
"That one is still mine," Savard said. "Good thing he got traded."
NO MIRAGE
Good thing Savard landed in Boston, too. He may have been a late-bloomer, but he also has shown that his big Atlanta campaign was anything but a mirage. Earlier this season, he celebrated his 600th NHL point and has 17 multiple-point efforts in his first 47 games.
"It took some time, I learned along the way," said Savard, who produced 78 and 96 points in the past two seasons. "I've had some ups and downs. I'm happy where I've got to, through hard work."
As much as he would revel in the opportunity to play for his country, in what will be a most anticipated series of games on Canadian soil, he is doing his best not to look too far ahead.
And he knows that the success he has in Boston may earn him the first-class ticket to Vancouver.
"Right now, I'm focused on the Bruins," Savard said. "As long as I play hard here, hopefully I will get noticed and get the chance (to be an Olympian.)"

I never thought I'd say this...
But having ONLY the Habs broadcast of the game available, in French? Is still about a thousand times better than having to hear Darren Elliot run his damned mouth.

Yes we did! Looch to miss Young Stars
Uh, so yeah, how about that thing downtown today, eh?? Was that intense or what?? I almost wish I had gone down just to hear that song Yo-Yo Ma and Izhak Perlman played echoing through the empty canyons of the abandoned city streets. Welcome to a new dawn, America. Let's try not to fuck this one up, k?
Moving on to hockey. Milan Lucic is bowing out of the Young Stars game due to a lingering injury. Frown.
Thrash play Habs tonight. Thrash play Flyers tomorrow night. Here's a tip for all you statisticians - Niittymaki is ill, and likely to not play. Start adding your 1s and 0s and tell me what you come up with!
Anyway, stuff to do, places to do it that aren't here.

Zach nets 2 pts in a 7-2..... thrashing.
SORRY I HAD TO!
Congrats to my favourite shirtless cowboy doppleganger for his first NHL point! On the off chance there's a photo from the play, I'll put that up. CAUSE HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE ZACH BOGOSIAN?!
ETA: AND his first NHL GOAL! OMG ZACH! Banner game!
And seriously? Who is this team and where are the Thrashers? What's going on? SERIOUSLY WHAT IS GOING ON? Are they just going to get everyone's hopes up that maybe, maybe they're finally clicking as a team, only to dash them on the rocks with a return to form when Philly comes to town Wednesday?
Also I love saying Pekka Rinne. But like it's one word. Pekkarinne. It's like yogilates! You can't stop saying it.

Goodbye Jason Williams, hello Clay Wilson
Apparently the Thrash vets demanding Kovy be given the C inspired D-wad to do something beyond picking up Waverly from the Preds. Earlier today, J-Willy (not to be confused with J-Willy of Carolina) was traded to the Columbus Blow Jobs for Clay Wilson, and a pick this summer.

I'm not really sure what to say to this.
The B's keep winning; Atlanta Spirit sucks
And really, thank god about the B's, because if they'd lost to Habsy and his cult, I'd be distraught.
Here's the awesome front page of NHL.com - Z being the lead story!
So here's Stu talking about his throw-down, which I thought was awesome. Way to step up and fill in for Luc!
And here's the fight, along with the rest of the highlights. Hopefully including Timmy popping Andrei Kostitsyn or whoever the hell it was that banged Ward into the glass:
ETA: Here's Timmy taking out Andrei:
I think Timmy is my new hero. And I think ALL goalies should start banging more players. You want to make the game more exciting? LET THE GOALIES HIT!!!
Now for those of you who still come here for Kari and/or Thrasher stuff... I'm breaking up with the Thrashers until the organisation gets its head out of its ass and starts running the team like, I dunno, A FUCKING NHL HOCKEY TEAM, and not, let's say, a beer league run by a bunch of cokeheaded drunks who love to sit around and talk about the good old days when they were relevant. You know what would help the team a lot? A GOALIE COACH. IT'S JUST A THOUGHT. SINCE EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE NHL HAS ONE YOU FUCKING LOSERS. Marting Brodeur, arguably the best goalie of this generation, HAS A GOALTENDING COACH. You can't expect ANYONE to get better at what they're naturally good at, without coaching in guidance. You get to the NHL the same way you get to Carnegie Hall: Practice, practice, practice. And that practice, learning, and improvement has to continue. Which it won't, without proper coaching. Way to go, Atlanta Spirit, you cheap bastards. You have now become the model for how NOT to run an NHL team.
And I have a bunch of pictures of Mistah Lehtonen from Casino Night, but I've gotta be real with you here. He's miserable in every fucking picture. Every smile is forced, I have not seen one photo of him yet where he's actually looking at the camera, and has a real smile. So I'm not posting them. I'm not spreading the misery around for all to see. You my faithful readers, are smart smart people. If you want to see them, I'm sure you can find them on ye ol' Intarwebs.
No wait, I lied, because I wanted to show this one picture, because (A) It's the closest Kari comes to a real smile, and (B) this is the most awkwardly uncomfortable photo I have ever seen in my life. And I've seen and been in many. But this photo could not be any more forced (photo courtesy TammyMoose):
It looks lovely at first glance. A very nice photo of the Johan Hedberg and Kari Lehtonen, the team's beloved (?) goaltending tandem. And then you start reading the body language, and it all unravels verrrrrrry quickly.
Get it together Atlanta Spirit. If you don't know how to run a fucking hockey team, I'll buy it off you for $50 and some BBQ ribs. Because I am about 1,000,000% certain that I could do a better job of owning a team than this group of don't-give-a-fucks. You know how? I'D HIRE A FUCKING GOALIE COACH TO START!
Anyway, B's are flipflopping at the top with the Sharks, who need to go on a damned losing skid already, Luc might be back for the next game (fingers crossed!), Bergie's skating again and feeling good (toes crossed!), and playing with Marc Savard appears to make ANYONE look good.
Tonight is the first Thrash game since that clusterfuck on ice that was the Kittens game. If there's a time for redemption, and a team against which to find it, that time is now, and that team is the Sens. Get it done, boys.

Sweet lord the B's are dropping like flies
Phil Kessel is now on IR with mono. Seriously who goes on IR with mono? I've never had mono personally, so I have no idea what it's like, but is it really an IR and not a day-to-day? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO PLAY WITH SAVARD?! EDIT Kessel's expected to be out up to a month, according to Chiarelli.
..... A MONTH!!!!! FROWNY.
In other news, Kevin Regan, Tuukka Raask and Saint called (back) up, Matt Lashoff, Tuukka Raask, and Kevin Regan have been sent down. YEAH YOU READ RIGHT. I'm not entirely sure which goalie is still here though, it's all very confusing. Can't C make his mind up?
Does anyone have news on Lucic? And his "upper torso" injury? Why is that always in quotations? Does the guy have a sinus infection or something?
Anyway, no seriously, B's play the Habs tomorrow night and they're down 2/3 of their top line. GET WELL SOON KESS! YOU TOO GINO!

Hell yeah, Luc, Wheels and Little!!
They're doing rookies vs sophomores this year, and I gotta be honest, I don't have the attention span to read the whole article and figure out who's playing where, although I could probably look and tell you. However, Here's your 2009 YoungStars lineup, sorted alphabetically.
Nicklas Backstrom (Washington)
Patrik Berglund (St. Louis)
Mikkel Boedker (Phoenix)
Andrew Cogliano (Edmonton)
Drew Doughty (Los Angeles)
Brandon Dubinsky (New York R)
Erik Ersberg (Los Angeles)
Michael Frolik (Florida)
James Neal (Dallas)
Mason Raymond (Vancouver)
Luke Schenn (Toronto)
Marc Staal (New York R)
Devin Setoguchi (San Jose)
Steven Stamkos (Tampa)
Kris Versteeg (Chicago)

Does Carrie Underwood know... ?
So the big news on the hockey/Hollywood scene these days is Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher of the Sens. And not to be a huge shit stirrer (haha, who am *I* kidding?) but has anyone told Peta's Sexiest Vegetarian that her new boytoy loves hunting and fishing, has a cabin full of taxidermied animals he's killed, and participates in any and every outdoor sporting show he can get invited to? Inquiring minds want to know!

Gather round my loves, it's picture time!
B's pull a sweet win over the Sens (I rather enjoyed how the B's toyed with their emotions, letting them think they MIGHT have a chance to win, then RIPPED all hope out of their hands with the Savard goal!) and was the first team to reach 30 wins this season, having done it in 42 games. Well played, Bruins, well played indeed! Kari got his 1st shutty of the year, 12th of his career, Jimmy Slats had possibly his best game of the year, and holy shit the Thrashers potted 4 goals, and played some damned good defence. Slap my ass and call me Charlie! Although someone, perhaps Valabik as he seems to have learnt and settled down a bit, should take Boults aside and have a word with him about how to pick your battles.
Anyway, moving on, moving on. Look. Teh pictures! So pretty! If ANYONE has a photo of Savvy doing the glove pump up towards the crowd after his goal, I will be your best friend forever, and talk about how amazing you are to my crowd of 9 faithful readers, and then they too will love you! Oh and also, check out this great article on the B's!
As always, pics resize to 1024 etc etc etc. Don't you guys know this by now??
I love that Z's laughing at Fish.
.... oh wait.

Shutout!
Congratulations, Thrashers! You may again walk with pride in self and team. Now can you do that again for the next 40 games?

Why we should look to the NFL for guidance
Once upon a time, being named to the NHL All Star game was an amazing honour. Not that it's not now, but it doesn't have nearly the significance it once did, especially with a traveshamockery being made of the whole voting process, year after year. So let's take a page out of the NFL's book, shan't we?
- 1/3 of the vote is decided by the fans
- 1/3 of the vote is decided by the players
- 1/3 of the vote is decided by the coaches and GMs
Let's take a look at the players who did not make the starting line up, shall we?
Jeff Carter: 27G, 17A, 44P, +7
Phil Kessel: 24G, 16P, 40P, +16
Alex Ovechkin: 27G, 26A, 53P, +12
Marc Savard: 13G, 36A, 49P, +25
All of those players, except one, made the Eastern Conference reserve. And Kess? Well, I hope Kess didn't do like Savvy (4:42pm), and leave that weekend open.
The All Star Game has become a joke. Everyone's saying it, but is anyone listening? How many more years do the fans get to outsmart the league, and turn it into a circus? Change the way the voting is done, and make our vote far less significant than it is. Clearly, we can not be trusted, and even as they're snickering while accepting the "honour" of being named an All-Star, the players aren't too likely to rock that union boat and call shenanigans. Or bullshit. So someone needs to. Who's going to step up and be the hero?

Boston, MA - The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins Zdeno Chara, Marc Savard and Tim Thomas have been named to the Eastern Conference All-Star roster for the 2009 NHL All-Star game, which will be held on Sunday, January 25 at 6:00 p.m. ET at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Additionally, one of the most offensively gifted group of Eastern Conference forwards in recent years will be headlined by starters Crosby, Malkin and Kovalev, along with Washington's Alex Ovechkin, Tampa Bay's Vincent Lecavalier, Carolina's Eric Staal, Buffalo's Thomas Vanek, Boston's Marc Savard, New Jersey's Zach Parise, Ottawa's Dany Heatley, Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk and Philadelphia's Jeff Carter.

[Bruins] Yin and Yang, bizarro style?
So.... Lucic is injured, and for once Claude Julien's playing his cards close to the vest, and not even specifying if it's upper or lower body. But! Fret not! Jarkko Ruutu is suspended for 2 games for biting Andrew Peters, and really my question here is, who in their right mind would bite a nasty ass hockey player glove? Marc Savard, that's who! If you recall, when Savvy played for the Thrashers in '03, he bit Darcy Tucker on the glove and got to watch from the press box for 3 games. Somehow this story has a nice logical tie-up but I'm not entirely sure where or how to find it, so, draw your own conclusions.

Reading is fundamental
From the Edmonton Journal:
The Los Angeles Kings say their goalie search is on hold. With the emergence of Jonathan Quick, they dumped Jason LaBarbera, dealing him to Vancouver. Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen, who's fallen out of favour with the Thrashers, could possibly be traded for a forward like Patrick O'Sullivan. So, first question is, when did Kari fall out of favour? I could be wrong, but isn't he the only goalie to get any wins in like.... 10 games? Also, didn't he come back from injury, and significantly lower the GAA per game? And let's be honest. Is there another goalie in this league that can consistently face around 40 shots per game, come to play every night, and win when he's actually backed up by his team? Maybe he's wrong to call out the team for not showing up to play in this period or that, but someone should. With no captain, who's serving as the caller-outer? I totally made that word up, thanks for asking. But no seriously. If Lehtonen goes for a skater, who's going to play in goal? I think Moose's performance in Toronto shows that not even he can get the team to play well enough to win. So the team is down their star goalie, and now there is yet another awkwardly-fitting cog in this supposed machine. You do realise that if Kari goes to any city that has anything resembling "a team" in front of him, facing, say, 23 shots per game, he'll carry them quite deep?
In summation, trading Kari will further his career, and further mire Atlanta in the quicksand they're already buried waist-deep in. That said, let the rumour-mongering begin.

Bruins home win #Eleventy, Is Zach a cowboy?
Let's get the cowboy thing out of the way first, since I'm sure that's what a lot of you are here for. My apologies to Mrs. Bogosian, should she be reading, no offence intended, ma'am! Your son is lovely and I'm sure he's a quite charming young man!
Is Zach Bogosian moonlighting as a sexy cowboy model?
I think the evidence speaks for itself! Bravo, Zach! Well done you. Keep up the good work, kid. That's the way to work a bad economy! If you want more of Zach, here's his intermission interview from 12/31:
Moving onto the B's... first big props to Gord Kluzak for chirping the shit out of the Bill Cosby sweater Mike Milbury wore during the Winter Classic. But bigger props and congratulations to the Bruins for like the ... 19th straight win and 12th home win? I can't remember! It's a ridiculous number! They're 10-0-0 in the last 10! The B's are now in 1st place in the NHL with 62 pts (Sharks carrying 61)!
Streaks are being broken that date back to the 70s and the 20s and all sorts of ridiculous stats that indicate you should really be watching the Bruins play, if you enjoy that sort of hockey with hitting and scoring and defence.
Both Lucic and Axelsson scored, once again proving Julien's instincts correct. Still, the Savard/Kessel line needs someone with some muscle, because there were Pens draped all over them like red velvet in a brothel. Axelsson's a great player, but he's not too likely to ride hurt on anyone anytime soon. Nor really intimidate anyone away from his linemates with just a look. But hey, PJ scored, Krej scored, Luc scored the eventual game winner, and Savvy sealed it with an empty netter. See?
On the left you'll see the toe of Luc's stickblade.
Below you'll see Luc sort of celebrating:

B's play again Saturday afternoon @ 12:30EST v. the Sabres, on NESN, MSG, and whatever center ice channel you get. Really, you should watch.
The Thrashers, they play tonight. Because I have no attention span, this post took me all day to write, yet I've not read any game day previews. Nor post-game reviews lately, either. But I think they should start Hedberg, being that it's a later than usual start time and clearly that messes with Kari's timing. I also think they should try to keep doing what they were doing in the game against Boston, because THAT'S the way to win hockey games. Valabik, stay out of the box, please? I know it's hard, but resist the temptation to squish the 'Nucks like little bugs. I KNOW I KNOW I SAID I WASN'T GOING TO WRITE ABOUT THEM but my god. You don't just turn an allegiance off like a lightswitch. You can, however, turn it down like a rheostat, so figure that out.
Lastly, my deepest sympathies to Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman, and his family, on the recent loss of his father, Bill.

Kari! Moose! STAY HEALTHY!!!
You guys...! Pony is hurt! Possibly with a groin pull. And Krahn was playing with Turple on the bench, which means Gherson's down as well. Pavelec left warm-ups on the 30th and didn't return in uniform, and he also did not play nor back up for the game last night. The only thing I can find on the situation is one line from the Mantioba Sun:
Ironically, Krahn wouldn't have been playing if Ondrej Pavelec hadn't been injured during the pre-game warm-up.
And a blurby on the Wolves message board:
Posted: Tue Dec 30, 2008 7:18 pm
According to reports Pavelec left the pre-game warm-up early going down for a shot. Sounds like he could have pulled his groin. Might be nothing but we'll see who's in net in a few minutes.
Why is reporting on AHL injuries so NON-EXISTENT?!
Anyway, stay healthy guys. MIND THE GROINS!

Photos: B's and Thrash (+lots)
I fell a little behind in the picture gathering lately. My bad. Does anyone even care? Probably not, but regardless, here's some pictures from the past few Bruins and Thrashers games.
and his first shorthanded NHL goal!
(SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAINT!)
even when Malkin's about to mount him like a pony.
And two pictures of Milan Lucic's fight with Tim Wallace, from my girl L:
scored a beauty while falling. Proof that if you
just throw it at the net, good things happen.
Despite last night being Zach Bogosian's 1st game back after missing 28 with a broken leg, I haven't found a single photo of him yet. So here's a picture of a shirtless cowboy that looks a lot like him:
Happy new year, everyone!
